An actor is usually a trained person who acts in a production and works in film, television, theatre, or radio in that capacity.
An extra is a performer in film, television, stage, musical, opera or ballet production, who appears in a nonspeaking, non-singing or non-dancing capacity, usually in the background eg. in a busy street scene in or as an audience member. Casting criteria for extras depend on the production. Becoming an often requires little to no acting experience; punctuality, reliability and the ability to take direction may figure more prominently than talent. Epic Films and War Films employ background actors in large numbers: some films have featured hundreds or even thousands of paid extras. On a film or TV, extras can be referred to as "background performers", "background artists" or simply "background".
